Is Concealed Carry Legal in Texas?

If you’re in Texas and wondering whether you can legally carry a concealed handgun, the answer is yes. Texas allows concealed carry under its “permitless carry” (constitutional carry) law for most adults 21 and older who can legally possess a firearm. You can still get a License to Carry (LTC) if you want extra benefits, but it’s no longer required for basic concealed carry in public.

Current Texas Law: How Concealed Carry Works in 2025

Concealed Carry

Texas law changed significantly in 2021 with House Bill 1927, which allowed adults who are legally eligible to possess firearms to carry a handgun openly or concealed without a license. That rule remains in force in 2025.

To legally carry on your person, you must:

  • Be 21 or older (or 18+ if military)
  • Not be prohibited from firearm possession under state or federal law
  • Carry a handgun in a holster if open carrying
  • Follow all restricted-location laws

Texas still recognizes both permitless carry and licensed carry, and both remain legal options in 2025.

Why Many Texans Still Get a License to Carry (LTC)

Even though you don’t need a permit to conceal carry, an LTC offers important advantages:

  • Carry in more places: Certain federally restricted areas allow LTC holders but not permitless carriers.
  • Faster law-enforcement verification if stopped.
  • Reciprocity: Your Texas LTC may allow you to carry concealed in other states that honor Texas permits.
  • Background check shortcut when purchasing firearms.

Many responsible gun owners choose to get an LTC for these reasons.

Where Concealed Carry is NOT Allowed in 2025

Texas still has a list of restricted locations where weapons — including concealed handguns — are prohibited unless an exception applies. You may not carry in:

  • Schools and school-sponsored events (K-12)
  • Polling places during voting
  • Courthouses and court offices
  • Racetracks
  • Secure airport areas (past TSA)
  • Correctional facilities
  • Bars where more than 51% of revenue comes from alcohol (marked with a red 51% sign)
  • Private property where the owner posts 30.06 or 30.07 signs

Violating these restrictions can lead to criminal charges.

Important Nuances for 2025

  • Private businesses can still prohibit concealed carry through proper signage (30.06 for concealed, 30.07 for open). If you ignore these, you could be charged with criminal trespass.
  • College campuses allow concealed carry only for LTC holders and under specific campus rules. Permitless carry is NOT permitted on college premises.
  • Vehicles: You may lawfully keep a concealed handgun in your car or truck, even without an LTC, as long as you are not committing a criminal offense other than a minor traffic violation.
  • Intent matters: Carrying while intoxicated is a crime, and using a firearm recklessly can turn lawful carry into criminal conduct.

Who Cannot Conceal Carry in Texas

Even in a permitless carry state, certain individuals remain prohibited from having or carrying firearms:

  • Felons
  • Individuals convicted of family-violence offenses (certain time windows apply)
  • Subjects of active restraining/protective orders
  • Some individuals with certain mental-health adjudications
  • Anyone federally prohibited under 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)

If any of these apply, carrying concealed becomes illegal.

Traveling With Concealed Handguns

  • Other states: Your ability to conceal carry outside Texas depends on the other state’s laws. Many states require a permit, so having a Texas LTC helps.
  • Flying: You cannot carry concealed through TSA, but you can transport unloaded, locked firearms in checked baggage following airline and TSA rules.

 Final Take

In Texas, concealed carry is fully legal for most adults through permitless carry. You don’t need a license to carry concealed as long as you meet eligibility rules and follow location restrictions. Getting a Texas License to Carry isn’t mandatory, but it offers valuable benefits — especially if you travel or want more legal protection. If you carry a handgun in Texas, stay informed, carry responsibly and always respect posted signs and restricted zones.
